The Financial Times has labeled both Barcelona and Catalonia the ‘top city’ and ‘top region’ for the future. The prestigious newspaper’s fdi magazine singled out Barcelona Catalonia’s foreign investment promotion strategy at the European Cities & Regions of the Future 2012/13 event, part of MIPIM, one of the most important fairs in the real estate sector, held in Cannes from 6th to 9th March. The event brought together more than four thousand real estate investors as well as developers, architects and institutions. ‘Barcelona Catalonia’ is the brand promoted by the Generalitat and the City Council and was praised by leading industry figures for its quality projects and proactive approach to promoting assets and detecting niche markets.
Meanwhile, an incentive to further attract foreign investment and transform Barcelona into one of the global hubs for new technologies has been officially created. Barcelona City Council, the Catalan Government and the Spanish Government have created the ‘Fundació Barcelona Mobile World Capital’ providing 30 million Euros each. Open to the private sector, the initiative aims to foster projects related to the mobile phone technology, create jobs and boost the economy by luring foreign investors.
Barcelona was declared the organising city of the Mobile World Congress, the world’s main trade fair and conference of the mobile phone industry, related technology and services until at least 2018. The Catalan capital will not only organise the MWC until then but also related activities will be held throughout the year.
“In the last few years Barcelona has changed radically in the sense that it has become much more international and is increasingly being recognized as a city which is a perfect base for international business” explains Lucas Fox Director Alex Vaughan “Of our clients around 50% are looking for a holiday property and the other 50% are looking to relocate. A good proportion of those looking to relocate are company owners or entrepreneurs and have chosen Barcelona because of its many business advantages:- Infrastructure, superb transport links, low taxes, desirability as a destination for international employees, ease of recruiting skilled local employees; and the other obvious advantages:- climate, sea, culture, the fact that Barcelona is regularly voted one of the best cities to live in the world. The naming of Barcelona as the European technology capital and the continuing focus on technology and investment in areas such as 22@ is an additional plus for the city and I am sure that it will be another factor that persuades more of our international clients to establish their business in Barcelona. Our new Commercial & Investment Property team is currently receiving a great deal of interest in retail and office space in the city’s prime area and we expect this level of demand to increase in the next 12 months”
Next year’s World Mobile Congress will be held at the Gran Via 2 location, the second largest trade and exhibition centre in Europe. Designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, it boasts state-of-the-art trade fair technology with 240,000 m² of exhibition space divided into 8 pavillions and a convention centre. Also nearby are a large shopping centre (more than 200 units), IKEA, the Europa-Fira train station, numerous hotels and the “Cuitat de la Justicia”, home to the majority of Barcelona’s legal departments. It is located at just 12km from the airport.
