Guía de Lucas Fox de… Sitges

Lucas Fox Guide to Sitges

Lucas Fox guide to…Sitges

Lucas Fox Guide to Sitges

The long wide promenades, stretches of clean, sandy beaches, vast national park and proximity to Barcelona, airport and private schools have made Sitges a firm favourite for many international families over recent years. An estimated 35% of Sitges inhabitants are from Northern Europe, mainly from the UK, Scandinavia, France and Holland. Its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, popular restaurants, golf clubs, marinas and desirable property are also popular with the international jet-set, many of whom have labelled it the ‘Sant Tropez of Spain’.

In recent years, Sitges has developed a reputation as an artist’s haven and a creative hub, after the Catalan painter Santiago Rusiñol lived there during the summer months in the 19th century. In the 1960s, the town became a centre for ‘counterculture’ during the reign of Franco and has since become a popular destination among the gay community. ‘Carnaval’ is a huge celebration for the town, normally taking place between the months of February and March. The festivities begin on ‘Dijous Gras’, or Fat Thursday, with the arrival of the King Carnestoltes. From the moment he appears until the burial of the sardine — late in the afternoon of Ash Wednesday-  the partying is non-stop.
The Sitges Film Festival is one of the most recognizable ones held in Europe, considered the world’s foremost international festival specializing in fantasy and horror movies. Established in 1967, the festival normally takes place every year in early October.

Sitges’ economy is based on tourism and culture with more than 4,500 hotel beds, half of them in four-star hotels. Its 17 beaches, excellent gastronomy, high quality shops and quaint streets have proved popular with visitors for decades, many of whom have chosen to either move to the town permanently or buy second homes.

Sitges is a unique location on the Catalan coast for many reasons” explains Juan Torregosa of the Lucas Fox Sitges office “ Its fantastic climate, protected by the Garraf mountain range, its lush green surroundings, its beaches and pretty coves, the beautiful Old Town , excellent sports facilities, great shopping and international schools all make Sitges a privileged location. In addition the town is well connected by road and rail to the airport as well as the centre of Barcelona”

Setting sail from Barcelona

Since the 1992 Olympic Games and the increasing profile of the Barcelona World Race, sailing in and around Barcelona has undergone something of a resurgence in the last twenty years or so and has opened up the city to the sea. It may come as a surprise to some that sailing is the sport which has given Spain the most Olympic medals.  Barcelona boasts two yacht clubs – the Real Club Nautico and the Real Club Maritimo – and four well equipped marinas – Port Olimpic, Port Forum, Marina Badalona and Port Vell – the latter of which is in the process of being re-modeled to accommodate SuperYachts up to 160m.
For many the attraction of Barcelona as a sailing base lies in its climate. Compared to other sailing bases, you can get onto the water practically the whole year round. This, in addition to low rents in the winter months means that the likes of the Catalan capital remain attractive to boat owners outside high season. Barcelona was a well kept secret as a locatin to keep your boat all year,” explains John Audabran of  Barcelona Private Yacht Services “Prior to creating my own Company I used to head the Marketing department of Marina Port Vell and over the years a large community of sailors from many parts of the world decided to live onboard in the old port.  Lots of couples from the UK moved there –  they even created their own radio station. The saying was ‘with more than 300 days of sunshine why go back to rainy England to be cold and miserable’. It’s also a lot cheaper to live here”

Sailing from Barcelona offers many possibilities. For those who fancy a day-trip, you can sail south of Barcelona to the vibrant town of Sitges and its long sandy beaches. If you are feeling more adventurous, sail further south to historic Tarragona or even Valencia, but allow at least a week for your trip. Sailing north you can discover the breathtaking bays and coves of the Costa Brava with its numerous stop-off points including AiguaBlava, Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc, L’Estartit, the bay of Roses and the stunning town of Cadaques on the Cap de Creus Peninsula  “A trip up to the Costa brava will take a good 18 hours of sailing time, warns John Audabran “but who needs to rush? A four day trip would be better.”
The Balearics is also a popular destination. The sun-kissed ancient Mediterranean Port of Palma provides an excellent base for discovering the Balearic capital. If you have a week or more to spare, you can discover Ibiza, Menorca, Formentera…

If you are thinking of registering a sailing boat, you’ll need to do so if the vessel spends more than half the year in Spanish waters. The majority of the Maritime Authorities are able to register (or re-register) vessels. The cost of registration includes a matriculation tax of 12 percent of the vessel’s value. “To charter a yacht  in Spain the boat needs to be commercially registered and paperwork indicating that the VAT was paid on the hull,” explains Audabran. “Then a lengthy process of bureaucracy begins with the application for a Charter permit”
A sailing permit (titulo de recreo) is not needed to sail the likes of motor boats of up to 4 metres in length and power less than 10Kw, sailing boats up to 5 metres in length, kayaks and canoes. All other vessels, however, can only be handled by a person holding the appropriate licence. Failure to have a licence may result in the vessel being confiscated or a hefty fine, so it is advisable to do your homework before setting sail…

5 Fantastic Things About the Sitges Film Festival

From 6 – 16 October 2011, Sitges again hosts the world’s premiere film festival focused on fantasy, science fiction and horror cinema. International film cognoscenti and the industry’s up-and-coming talents descend on the Catalonian seaside paradise of Sitges for 10 days to showcase new films and cult classics. Producers, stars and the creative talent will network, and aficionados will celebrate the realm of fantasy-related genres. We share our top 5 fantastic things about this year’s Sitges Film Festival (aka the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia).

1. Bryan Singer

Sitges Film Festival

Director Bryan Singer is one of the guests of honor at this year's Sitges Film Festival

One of the fantasy film industry’s greatest names – Bryan Singer – will be presented with the Sitges 2011 Grand Honorary Award at the Sitges Film Festival this year. For helping the X-Men cinema franchise live up to the potential the comic series always had, for his brilliantly adept film-making of The Usual Suspects and the disturbing Apt Pupil, and for creating one of the most fascinating primetime characters in House, this year’s Festival appropriately bestows its accolades on director Bryan Singer. It is a return to the festival for Singer who debuted his first movie at the Sitges Film Festival when he showed Public Access to an impressed audience in 1993. We all forgive you for the unnecessarily camp Superman Returns, and look forward to your forthcoming offerings Jack the Giant Killer and a movie version of the scifi favorite Battlestar Galactica. Mr Singer will also be hosting a masterclass during the festival for budding film makers and directors.

2. Luigi Cozzi

Italian horror filmmaker Luigi Cozzi will also be present to accept the Nosferatu Award for a career’s length commitment to the fantasy genre. His 80s cult classics Starcrash and Contamination-Alien Arriva Sulla Terra have strong fan bases here in Spain and no doubt the director will receive a standing ovation and loud cheering as local afficionados descend on Sitges to join Festival goers in paying their respects to one of the greats of the international fantasy cinematic world. Cozzi will also share his documentary Roma Fantastica, made last year, with Sitges Film Festival audiences.

3. The Jack Daniel’s Zombie Walk

Part cautionary tale for those who imbibe too much of the sponsors’ product (we prefer a single malt), and part signature festival event, this year’s Sitges Film Festival Zombie Walk takes place on Friday October 14 starting at 8.30 pm at the festival’s HQ, the Miramar Building and travelling through the streets of Sitges before finishing along the Paseig de la Ribera promenade. From 10 pm, the zombies show you how to (beach) party with music by Los Tiki Phantoms and DJ Nino from the Pinker Tones, courtesy of the renowned Benicassim International Festival. If your supplies of zombie make up a running low or you want that added look of realism, there will be a limited number of spots for makeup help from midday on the Friday.

4. Staying at a luxury villa in Sitges

Luxury villa in Sitges

5. The Thing 2011

This year’s Sitges Film Festival closes with a prequel to the John Carpenter classic, The Thing. Made by upcoming Dutch director Matthijs van Heijningen with a world cast that includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead (American), Joel Edgerton (Australian), and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (English-born, ex-Milan model), this haunting tale of extraterrestrial growth in the Antarctic will have audiences on the edge of their seats right through to the end of this year’s programme.

Luxury villa in Sitges

5. The Thing, 2011

The Sitges luxury property market in 2011

Lucas Fox has a number of luxury properties in the idyllic haven just outside Barcelona: Sitges. We explore the Sitges property market in 2011 with Juan Torregrosa from Lucas Fox International Properties.

Sitges luxury property market

One of the recent luxury properties available in Sitges

“The Sitges luxury property market is very particular, as it has a unique character,” explains Mr.Torregrosa. “It is a world class destination that receives people from all parts of the world. This year, we have seen Sitges convert as a brand into one that is known for this cosmopolitan character across the globe. The excellent weather, commercial businesses, idyllic free time opportunities, beautiful beaches, and proximity to Barcelona and the airport have made this a special place in great demand by international property buyers.”

The Sitges property market in 2011

“The Sitges property market has seen an increase in prices of luxury properties in recent years,” sums up Torregrosa. “At the moment, there are enough luxury properties that purchasers can find with a great offer, and buy quickly. The views of the sea and local beaches are always key factors in great demand, and property buyers are drawn to the tranquillity of the residential zones and the proximity to all the village shops and markets.”

luxury property market in Sitges

Sitges property market in demand

Toreregrosa lists the most popoular areas in Sitges for luxury property: “The most popular properties in Sitges this year have been the houses and villas in the Maritime Passage, but we have seen strong demand across the luxury property market in Sitges. Terramar, Vinyet and Girona are also popular zones for buying luxury property in Spain.”

Predictions for the luxury property market in Sitges

“There has been a lot of movement in the luxury property market in Sitges”, confirms Torregrosa. Like other areas in Northern Spain, we expect a slight drop off in interest over the coming cooler months, but in Sitges this is never by much as there is always strong demand to view properties and of course, we have regular sales throughout the year.”
