Fashionistas guide to Barcelona

Antiques & Boutiques offers an ‘insider’s guide’ to Barcelona, and will help you find some of the city`s hidden gems including their favourite eateries, exciting fashion boutiques and antique furniture stores. They can also help you deck out your new home with some of Barcelona`s latest designs. Antiques & Boutiques are collaborating with Lucas Fox, in particular with property investors new to the city who need a bit of orientation.

We caught up with founders Lisa & Niki recently to ask them what the business is all about….

What is Antiques & Boutiques and when & why was it set up?

Antiques and Boutiques is a bespoke tour and style consultancy service which we set up over 3 years ago now . Initially we began doing the tours for friends in the design industry looking for inspiration, from there the idea grew from our own experiences of travelling to other countries and cities we were always looking to find something inspiring and unique to the places we visited.   We created Antiques and Boutiques with the aim to offer a stylish, personal and insider guide to like-minded people visiting the city. Connecting visitors to the best of Barcelona’s fashion and design scene, introducing clients to local designers , ateliers and bespoke products unique to Barcelona. It’s also a really lovely day out and a great way to meet with and feel like a local.

Who are the people behind it?

We are Lisa Richardson and Niki Robinson, two fashion designers that moved here from Milan and London over 6 years ago. We met through mutual designer friends and soon discovered that we had a lot of shared interests, in art and design, a love of vintage  and a shared passion for travel.

In broad terms, where would you place Barcelona in the world of design and fashion?

Barcelona is fast becoming  one of the most interesting design cities in Europe rivaling London and Paris, it has the right mixture of high end design, independent boutiques, showrooms, concept stores and ateliers. It is a creative city with a strong heritage of craft that is being nurtured. Shopping trends are focusing towards quality in well designed products and Barcelona is becoming an important platform in offering this. When we visit a city we want to find things that are unique to that place and that is what Barcelona can offer.

In what specific creative areas do you think the city excels in?

For us it is that craftmanship as well as bespoke high-end products that makes Barcelona excel, this helps us offer our customers a truly unique shopping experience

Vintage fashion seems to be becoming increasingly popular in Barcelona, why do you think that is and which areas, shops or markets would you suggest lovers of vintage clothes  should head to?

Barcelona has a lot of vintage stores all around the city, from Born, to Raval , Eixample and Gracia. You can find everything from fun retro boutiques and amazing costumiers to private showrooms or beautiful lifestyle boutiques. One of our favourites is Magnolia Antic,  a very beautiful and atmospheric store showcasing a hand picked collection of high end accessories, objects and homewares.

For those looking for a more upmarket/designer look, where are the main hotspots?

The main hotspots for upmarket designer shopping are the Eixample área and around Turó park.  You can find a great selection of international luxury brands around the upper end of Passeig de Gracia and the streets  leading off it are scattered with high end local designers and specialist boutiques.

And for high street fashion?

For high Street shopping head to Portal del Angel and Carrer Portaferrissa. You’ll find all of the Spanish and international high street brands and younger fashion outlets. It’s also a good area for Street style, sportswear and urban fashion.

As well as offering personalized shopping tours of Barcelona, you can also help those new to the city design and furnish their new home, how do you go about this?

We offer a consultancy and interior styling service which helps people to source, style and select fantastic  pieces for their home. This is aimed at people who have their own design ideas and like to be involved in the decorating process.

We start with an initial consultation in the client’s home then make appointments to introduce them to the best interior design stores for their taste. We have a great directory of all the city’s best interior design and decoration stores, private galleries and showrooms.

We also offer a bespoke introduction to Barcelona, for people who are moving here. When you’re new to a city finding your way around can be a daunting experience so we are here to give you the inside local knowledge and make the experience fun and easy.

For those interested in purchasing Antique furniture, in which areas of the city should people be looking?

Our favorite Antique shops are scattered all around the city , but there are a good selection in Eixample and in the Gotico. Some of the small shops are showcases for huge almacens, so there’s a lot more on offer behind the scenes. There is also great Antique shopping outside of Barcelona and you can find monthly Antique markets in some small towns and villages.

What types of antique furniture can be found in the shops and markets?

You can find just about anything at the markets and auction houses in Barcelona and beyond. There are great antique and restoration studios specializing in everything from British Colonial furniture, to art nouveau lighting or mid century Italian Design .

What do you think the most common mistakes are when people embark on a decorating project?

Not thinking it through. Having a good idea about the space and how you see the finished project is important, so planning is vital. For us the feeling and atmosphere is very important so we like to créate mood and concept boards as a good starting point.

We offer help with this as part of our service.

What would you advise people to before  embarking on a decorating project?

Research, start collecting images and inspiration from interior magazines, books, travels, textiles and exhibitions.  Pinterest  is also  great inspiration resource for creating quick and easy mood boards. This will let you see how everything works together and what direction you want to head in.  Alongside that start creating a colour palette that works for you, and always try them out before comitting. We love Farrow and Ball for paint and wallpaper, every colour and design comes in a sample pot or strip so you can try it out at home.

Many properties in parts of the Old Town lack natural daylight, what advice would you give to a homeowner looking to brighten up their home?

We would suggest keeping floors and surfaces light to reflect any light you may have as well as accessorising the walls with mirrors, you could consider using large mirrors or a wall of picture sized mirrors to reflect light whilst making it into a feature for the wall.

The right lighting is essential for dark apartments, try  adding  back lights behind plants that will bounce off the walls and invest in some great lamps, we love Biosca and Botey  for all the latest in lighting trends.

Where do you think the most exciting up-and-coming properties are located in the city? What are the stand-out features?

The San Antoni area is becoming the new trendy area of the city, with  cool bars and cafes such as Federal  opening up it is attracting a new younger crowd. We love the tree-lined avenues and you can find beautiful Modernista apartments in this area, it is within easy access to Montjuic and charming San Antoni market which is now under renovation.

For us it is a choice between the Modernista buildings in the eixample, with their high ceilings and patterned tiled floors to re-working an old industrial space in the Poble Nou area to create an ultimate urban open-plan home.

For space and grandeur we’d head uptown towards the Tibidabo to one of the beautiful old Masias or Palaces with majestic views over the city.

If people are interested in your services how should they contact you?

You can get in touch with us via our website www.antiquesandboutiques.com or send an email to Lisa or Niki at info@antiquesandboutiques.com and we will get back to you!

What’s On in Barcelona Autumn 2012

Autumn is always an event-ful time in Barcelona for concerts , exhibitions  and shows so we’ve rounded up some of the best around town…

For 44 years Barcelona has played host to an increasingly popular annual jazz festival. This year the music gets going  on 30th October until 30th November in venues across town. Once again, there is a great line-up with performances from the likes of Sonny Rollins, Melody Gardot, Samantha de Siena and the Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra. You need to buy individual tickets for each event – there is not one ticket that covers the whole event. Venues vary from the grand Palau de la Musica to small smoky bars like Jamboree and Harlem Jazz Club.
For more information go to Barcelona Jazz Festival

The Liceu Theatre offers some enticing opera and ballet in the run-up to Christmas including the Barber of Seville and The Nutcracker. For tickets go to

Japanese cooking is the star of this year’s edition of the Manga Fair which is moving to Barcelona for the first time.  From 1st  to 4th November, the Palau 2 of the Fira de Barcelona in Montjuïc will be the venue for this gathering, renowned in the world of Manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation). The main reason why the fair has abandoned its usual venue in Hospitalet de Llobregat is the need to cater for the increasing number of visitors. For more information go to Manga festival Barcelona

The exhibition “Explosion! The Legacy of Jackson Pollock” is on at the Fundació Miró until mid February and explores the North American artist’s influence on action painting and performance art. The exhibition explores his influence, which has been felt in areas like action painting and performance through the work of numerous artists, including Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman and Yves Klein. Joan Miro exhibitions

Over a hundred of the New York Times Magazine’s published pictures, by photographers such as Sebastião Salgado, Nan Goldin and Lee Friedlander can be seen in an exhibition at Palau Robert, representing thirty years of the magazine’s history. Genres include photojournalism, fashion reporting and conceptual photography. Until 2nd December. New York Times Magazine exhibition

In the world of sport you can catch the ‘Freestyle Masters’ of Barcelona – basically acrobatics from the expert riders of Supercross. On at the Palau San Jordi.  And finally, concerts this autumn include Diana Krall at the Auditori, Skink Anansie at Razzmatazz and  Patti Smith at the Palau de La Musica.

The Lucas Fox guide to Sant Just Desvern, Barcelona

The attractive town of Sant Just Desvern is located to the west of Barcelona and stands out for its extensive gardened areas and its architecture and layout, still conserving emblematic modernista buildings and masias. Ancient history is represented by the archaeological sites of Penya del Moro (Moor’s Crag) and the flour mill. Can Ginestar, a Modernista style masia is also one of the town’s attractions, and one of the reference points for the architecture of the Walden-7 development by Ricardo Bofill.
The town is located in the region of  the Baix Llobregat – with more than 15 km of wide beaches, it also has the mountains of Garraf, Ordal and the majestic Montserrat mountain, ideal for trekking and nature activities; and the river which, in its last section, gives way to the Llobregat delta, an exceptional site in terms of ecology.

With just over 16 thousand inhabitants (idescat), the town of Sant Just Desvern offers both tranquil and green surroundings, with the magnificent Collserola mountains as a backdrop. The municipality consists of seven districts – North, South, Centre, Walden, Les Basses de Sant Pere and La Miranda. It has its borders with San Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan de Despi and Espluges de Llobregat.
The area (around 7km) offers a wide range services including numerous shops, restaurants, cinemas, fitness centres and medum-sized businesses which have helped contribute to the wealth of the town. Due to its proximity to the German and American international schools, Sant Just has proved a popular area with Germans and Americans as well as with some high profile FC Barcelona players, celebrities and politicians. The town is just five minutes from Avenida Diagonal and Pedralbes, 15 minutes to the centre of Barcelona and the airport.

Sant Just Desvern has deeply rooted festivals such as the Festa Major in August,  the Festes de Tardor (Autumn Festival, in October), the “karts de coixinets” race (go-karts made of wood) and the celebration of FiraDesvern

Juan Torregosa from the Lucas Fox Barcelona office recommends Sant Just Desvern as an excellent place to invest in property for both its attractiveness and location…

“It’s ideal in that it not just a beautiful place to live, surrounded by green areas and the mountains of the Collserola Park  but it is so well connected to the centre of Barcelona by road, rail, bus and tram. It’s also situated  a short distance from Barcelona’s business districts and a fifteen minute drive from the airport”

Costa Brava Properties and the Mysterious Landscape

The latest pride of the Dali Theatre-Museum in the northern Spanish town of Figueres, Landscape with Mysterious Elements, is now on exhibition, and makes a perfect stop-off when viewing Costa Brava properties. Purchased for close to 8 million Euros, the 1934 work by the world’s most recognized surrealist painter, Salvador Dali, is now displayed as part of the museum’s permanent collection.

The purchase is a coup for the museum, which is dedicated to promoting Dali’s works and his impact on the world art stage. In negotiations since 2004, the Museum was finally able to convince the previous owners that the painting would be better appreciated by a worldwide audience and more easily preserved in the pristine environment of the museum, rather than continue in the hands of the private collector.

Figueres is a northern town slightly inland from Spain’s stunning Costa Brava coastline, and makes a great rest point when inspecting the properties Costa Brava has to offer.

Costa Brava is expected to have a strong tourist season this year, as Spain continues to receive a surge in visitor numbers throughout the summer. This will bring holidaymakers to the area who are also interested in viewing the properties Costa Brava has available for sale, while travelling around the scenic landscape or when settling in to their holiday accommodation along the northern Spanish coast. Since the start of the year, airport passenger arrivals have been up by 20%, and this area is forecasted to see a sustained tourist increase of between 5 and 10% throughout the summer months.

Costa Brava properties home of Dali's museum

Viewing a new Dali acquisition makes an excellent sidetrip when inspecting Costa Brava properties

Landscape with Mysterious Elements is one of two significant works purchased by the Foundation this year, and will be on exhibition with the gallery’s other most recent acquisition, Study for ‘Honey is Sweeter than Blood’.

The Dali Theatre-Muesum makes a perfect excursion when holidaying in the area. There are also night exhibition opening hours throughout August. Visitors are encouraged to beat the queues and arrive early. If you are staying in the area while inspecting Costa Brava properties, a half-day at the Museum makes an excellent sidetrip and by arriving first thing, you can enjoy all that the Museum has to offer without the pressure of crowds limiting your viewing.

Girona properties paired with food and wine

If you are looking at Girona properties over a day or two, it is hard not to find a reason to visit Celler de Can Roca, and for those looking at Barcelona real estate it can be tempting to get in the car and visit Girona for a restaurant visit in any case. Celler de Can Roca (Can Sunyer, 48) is a Michelin-starred restaurant run by three brothers who share a passion for food, wine and deserts. The restaurant’s sommelier, Josep Roca, has just been recognised in Spain’s national gastronomic awards, while Restaurant magazine has named the restaurant the second best in the world.

For those viewing Barcelona real estate, a trip to Girona for a fine feed may seem a little too much, even with the accolades that the trio of brothers Roca have received of late, and some fascinating Girona properties to investigate. Comerç24 is an excellent alternative for those looking to find a restaurant with strong sommelier expertise and an opportunity to pair dishes with wines.

Comerç24 is located on the edge of the El Born neighborhood of Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district (Carrer de Comerç, 24). Open for lunch and dinner, it is suggested to visit when you have a few hours free, some good conversational company, and a hunger for experimentation and surprise. There are several degustation menu choices, but the 9 or 14 plate offering with wine pairings is ideal for building your understanding of how to combine food and wine, while also being delighted by the novelty and experiment of new international cuisine.

The brainchild of El Bulli alumni Carles Abellan, the restaurant concept aims to alternate “creation with tradition”. Dishes are inspired by Asian, Italian, American and, of course, Catalan cuisine. The atmosphere is gentle and light, without being so delicate that it feels uncomfortably fragile. There are usually a few seats available at lunch without a reservation, but these go quickly and are less likely during the summer months.

You can imagine yourself there with this video from Concierge:

While a side visit to Celler de Can Roca should definitely form part of your investigation into Girona properties, for those looking at Barcelona real estate, Comerç24 is a must, and an excellent chance to extend your own sommelier knowledge.
